Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 29, 2026

Wake Rowing ("Wake Rowing", "we", "us") provides live regatta spectating and rowing-training tools. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Wake iPhone app and our website at wakerowing.com, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

Who we are

Wake Rowing operates the Wake app for iPhone — which is what records your rows, on the water and on the erg — and the Wake Rowing website, which carries the spectator viewer, your training reports and library, and the console coaches and race organisers use. You can reach us any time at [email protected].

Information we collect

Account information

If you create a rower identity or sign in with Google or Apple, we receive a limited set of profile information from that provider — typically your name and email address and a stable account identifier. We use this only to create and recover your account and to attach your training history to you. We never receive your Google or Apple password.

We also keep a record of each device you use with Wake, including the app version and platform, so we can restore your training on a new phone and know which versions are still in use.

Location data

When you record a row or a race in the Wake app, we collect GPS location from your device (roughly once per second) for the duration of that session, along with the accuracy, heading and speed your device reports. Location is collected only while you are actively recording and have granted the app location permission. During a race you have entered, your snapped position on the course is shown to spectators in real time; a private "just rowing" session is never shown to spectators.

The spectator viewer on our website has a "find me" button that uses your browser location to place you on the bank and estimate when a boat will reach you. That position is used only on your own device and is never sent to us or stored.

Motion data (optional)

If you opt in to the stroke-rate or knock-to-mark features, the app reads your device's accelerometer and gyroscope on-device to estimate stroke rate and rhythm. These optional sensors are off by default. We store the derived values (such as strokes per minute), not the raw high-frequency sensor stream.

Heart rate and other health data

Wake has no heart-rate sensor of its own. We receive heart rate only when you connect a heart-rate monitor — a chest strap or armband paired to a Concept2 PM5 erg, which relays it to the app along with the machine's other readings, or the Wake app on your Apple Watch, which measures your heart rate during a row and sends it to your iPhone. If neither is used, we collect no heart rate at all.

The Watch app measures heart rate only while a row is being recorded, and only while it is running — this is not continuous monitoring. It reads nothing else from your Watch, and nothing at all from the Health app on your iPhone.

When it is connected, we store your heart rate alongside the rest of the row — a reading roughly once per second, plus your average for the session — so your training report can show heart rate against split and effort. It is stored with your other training data, deleted with it, and, like everything else here, never sold and never used for advertising. Please read How your information is shared for who else can see it.

Erg and machine data

When you record on a connected erg, we store what the machine reports: power (watts), drag factor, distance, stroke rate, and — on a Concept2 monitor — per-stroke measurements including drive length and the shape of each drive (the force curve).

Training and usage data

We store the sessions you record — your route, timing, splits, distance, and derived metrics — so we can produce your training reports and trends over time. Each recorded point also carries your device's battery level, which lets a coach see that a boat is about to go dark mid-practice and lets us diagnose a session that stopped early. We also collect basic technical information needed to operate the service securely.

App activity and diagnostics

We record a small set of first-party events about how the app is used — for example that a sign-in was started or completed, that a report or a force curve was opened, or that connecting to an erg failed — associated with your rower identity. If the app crashes, we may receive a summary of the crash. We use these only to find what is broken and to decide what to build next.

We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and this data is never used to build a profile of you for advertising.

Apple Health

If you turn on Apple Health export in the app's settings, Wake saves each finished row to the Health app on your iPhone as a rowing workout — its duration, distance, the route for a water row, and, for an erg piece, an energy estimate derived from the machine's power reading.

On your iPhone this is one-way, and outward. The iPhone app asks Apple only for permission to write, never to read, so nothing stored in the Health app on your phone reaches Wake — not your weight, not your activity, not your history, not anything else kept there. The export is off until you turn it on, and turning it off stops it; workouts already written stay in your Health app, where you can delete them yourself.

The Apple Watch app is the one exception, and it reads exactly one thing: your heart rate, while it is recording a row you started. It asks for that permission separately on the Watch, and for permission to record the workout session it needs in order to reach the sensor at all. It reads no other health data, and it reads nothing from your iPhone's Health app.

How we use your information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Information from Google and Apple sign-in

When you choose to sign in with Google, we request only your basic profile and email address to authenticate you. Wake Rowing's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use this data solely to let you sign in and to associate your training data with your account; we do not transfer it to others except as needed to provide the service, do not use it for advertising, and do not allow humans to read it except where required for security or to comply with the law. The same principles apply to sign-in with Apple.

How your information is shared

We do not sell your data and we share it in only these situations:

We never disclose health, fitness, or training data to third parties for advertising, marketing, or data-mining purposes, and we do not use it to train artificial-intelligence models.

Data storage, location, and security

Data is stored in our cloud backend (Supabase) and served through Cloudflare. Authentication tokens and secrets are stored only as hashes, access to the database is restricted, and traffic is encrypted in transit. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Data retention

We keep your account and training data for as long as your account is active so your history compounds over time. You can remove individual outings from your training library at any time — this takes them out of your library. To permanently delete your account and erase your associated personal data — including your recorded heart rate — use Delete my account in the app, or contact [email protected]. We may retain limited information where necessary for security, dispute resolution, or legal compliance.

Health and fitness data is never stored in iCloud, and the copy the app keeps on your phone while a row is uploading is excluded from your device backups.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA. We honor these rights for all users.

Children

Wake Rowing is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Junior athletes typically use the service under the direction of a coach, parent, or club. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice.
